The 'One' Event!
Saturday 25th of October 2008 07:07 pm

I recently had the pleasure of attending the ‘One’ event – a media focused day organised by resident artists at The Hive, ‘Fowler & Sumner’.

The ‘One’ event is a day centred on the inspiring concept of ‘artists’ tackling obstructions – with those who attend being challenged to produce new pieces of work by actively taking themselves out of their comfort zones.

We were each asked to choose a number between 10 and 153 – which turned out to be page numbers of the quite bizarre book Schott’s Original Miscellany (which consists of lots of very random facts and very unusual trivia) and each person was given a photocopy of the page that our number corresponded with.

Our first obstruction set was that our work had to be based on the content of our page – which in my case, meant my work would have to be centred around strange phobias! The second obstruction stated that those people who had chosen even numbers had to produce work that included both moving image and sound. Finally, each of us had to come up with our own obstructions for another member of the group – these ranged from dictating the length of shots, to having to use the photocopy as a style reference amongst other things – the rest of the day was then given over for us to produce our work which is where the fun could begin!!

The deadline of 4 o’clock (for screening of the finished films) meant the few hours we had beforehand were the most productive they could be – each of us had to gather our video/audio material and edit it using a variety of programmes into some sort of finished product. The environment was a pretty quiet one, with each of us deep in our work – although there were many nail-biting moments such as when footage was taking ages to render and things weren’t working as people had planned!! Impressively though, everyone managed to pull it off (although very much working to the final second!) – the projector was set-up and we gathered on the sofas for the big-screening of all of our work, which was our first chance of the day to see what the other people had responded with! You can watch the media based piece that I produced below… even though it will probably make no sense whatsoever!!!

As a developing artist working with young people within various media activities at The Hive, I found it a great experience to actually be challenged myself – learning new techniques and practices at the same time, just as young people at The Hive come to us to develop new skills in media and music related activities. The ‘One’ event was overall a positive and productive day for all of us who attended – and hopefully, ‘Fowler & Sumner’ will be turning it into a regular event, with Ellen and myself guranteed attendees for the next one!!! :-)
