An overview of select projects delivered by the Hive Music and Media Centre in Shropshire:

The Hive Music and Media Centre continually delivers a diverse variety of arts projects across the region, including Shropshire, Telford & Wrekin and Herefordshire, via The Music Pool. The primary aim of our projects is to work with partner organisations to provide young people with opportunities to have fun, develop new life skills and be creative.

Rural Reel - multi-media outreach project:

Rural Reel was a unique music and media outreach project, which the Hive delivered in 2009 and 2010, with thanks to funding from the Shropshire Aggregates Levy Sustainability fund.

The project provided invaluable opportunities for young people in rural areas to engage and participate in exciting creative activities.

Following 2009's successful project, which took place in Highley, Ellesmere, Ludlow and Cross Houses - the Hive received funding in 2010 from the Shropshire Aggregates Levy Sustainability Fund, to carry out the project for a second year in four new areas across the county.

In 2010, Rural Reel provided a series of eight weekly workshops for young people in Coalbrookdale, Condover, Market Drayton and Shawbirch - allowing them to work with professional music and media artists to develop new skills and produce original pieces of work.

The Shropshire Aggregates Levy Sustainability Fund provides funding for projects in areas which are affected by aggregate extraction.

Hyperlink - multi-media outreach project:

Hyperlink was a three year multimedia outreach project which was funded by BIG Lottery.

The innovative technology-based project gave young people aged 13+ the chance to learn how to do amazing things with computers and cutting edge equipment.

Participants decided what creative mediums they wished to work with, including podcasting, VJing, instant film making, animation and digital music for beginners.

The young people also explored free downloadable open-source software and experimented with their own video cameras, digital cameras, mobile phones and mp3 players.

The project was funded by the BIG LOTTERY FUND and was aided by Shropshire Youth. The project ran at Shrewsbury College of Arts & Technology, Centre North West in Oswestry, The Webb Centre in Dawley, Bridgnorth Youth Club and Bishops Castle Community Centre amongst several other locations.

Voltage - Youth Music Volunteering:

Voltage was Youth Music's V funded national music volunteering programme, which aimed to give young people the chance to make a positive difference and contribution to their local community. The Hive Music and Media Centre successfully delivered the Voltage programme for 3 years, working with a dedicated team of young volunteers each year, who actively became involved in projects that the centre ran across Shropshire.

The Voltage volunteers helped organise music events such as Live At The Hive and Open Mics, in addition to other activities which included music and media workshops for other young people. The Voltage volunteers also networked with other young volunteers across the UK on a regular basis and most importantly, the majority of volunteers have chosen to continue their involvement with the Hive, since the Voltage programme came to an end.
